Rhyme Scheme - February 2022

A monthly, music-themed meta crossword published at noon on the first Tuesday of every month. The puzzles increase in difficulty each month, and at year end there is a 13th puzzle (the "Mega-Meta") that invokes each of the 12 monthly puzzles. Currently available at https://pmxwords.com/, as well as through the Washington Post website here: MMMM at WaPo

Well! I was feeling just a little smug about having noticed something, but this cut me back down to size in a hurry :-) There are 10 red herring super-solvers on the board now, how even??

However, just as a PSA, here's an excerpt of the contest rules from the website:
Solvers get one try at figuring out the red herring, and they can submit their answer anytime during the year. Successful answers earn 5 points.

Solvers will also get a chance to guess the mega-meta early, and (if they’re successful) will score 5 bonus points plus 2 additional points for every month remaining in the contest. You can guess at the mega-meta as many times as you like, but incorrect guesses will incur 1-point penalties.
So personally, I'd hold off on the red herring until I was really sure, since there's no advantage to submitting it early--apart from the envy and accolades of your peers :-) But... if you're already really sure, as apparently these ten were, all I can say is wow, and congrats!

I'm with @Laura M. I noticed something, and I'm pretty confident that I know what the red herring is. But... no extra points for being early, and too late for bragging rights for being first, so may as well wait and watch it play out before submitting.
If you want help with a meta, feel free to PM me. The more specific you are about what you have and what you want, the more likely I can help without spoiling.

(And if I help you win a mug, I’ll be especially delighted.)

I totally agree. I'm thinking that I probably know what the red herring is, but (like Laura) I'm holding off on submitting "since there's no advantage to submitting it early".

Words I NEVER expected to hear from Mark, usually the least competitive of men: "I beat one of your Muggle buddies on the leaderboard!!"
Good luck, fellow Muggles!

I took a punt on the red herring and was incorrect. Ah well, there's always next year!
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

I've had a hell of a busy few days this week. But I did the grid yesterday in between meetings. (Okay, maybe a little during one or two of them. Shhhhh.) For some reason I had a hell of a time with it. (It hasn't been my year for puzzles.... yet.) Haven't had a real chance to look at the meta yet. Glad to hear it's "easy" for some of you. The way the last couple of weeks have gone, I need "EASY"!

On the board. I'm pretty sure of the red herring, but like others, I'll wait to submit it.

Okay. That was very easy. (Waiting for confirmation though.)

Let me guess - tried to over complicate it?

Of course.

Do I remember the meta clue & answer being a grid clue & answer in a recent puzzle? Not necessarily one of Pete's: WSJCC, P'sBox, MMM, MOAT, MEOW, PoaK, FMiPC, or other? You have a meta-related eidetic memory, Barbara. Am I nuts as well as overcomplicated?

Submit here https://pmxwords.com

Be careful to use the form for the monthly meta, not the mega meta or red herring, for the answer to this (“Rhyme Scheme”) puzzle.

I wouldn’t be surprised, but I don’t remember anything specific.

As for being nuts, I’m not the one to judge:)
