Ahoy Muggle Mateys!
The two-word place name is
"New World", and
"shiver me timbers!", it looks like 59 of you got it right!
As the title suggests, the first step involved finding grid entries to which "NEW" can be pre-pended to form new words or phrases. The symmetrically-placed grid entries were:
AGE
CASTLE
EDITION
JERSEY
TON
The 2nd step involved finding alternate clues that could also apply to the "NEW" words.
NEW AGE - 66A Music genre -
ROCK
NEWCASTLE - 68A English city -
LEEDS
NEW EDITION - 4A Music group formed in the 70's -
WINGS
NEW JERSEY - 16A Pennsylvania neighbor -
OHIO
NEWTON - 70A Unit of force -
DYNE
Arranging these alternate answers in grid order and selecting the first letters of each results in
"WORLD". Adding a "NEW" beginning produces
"NEW WORLD", a two-word place name that is the meta answer and a "new beginning" itself. Admittedly, this name hasn't been used much since the "Age of Discovery", but what do you expect from a salty old sea dog like Cap'n Rick?
Thanks everyone for solving my first meta! I'm looking forward to returning soon with my second!
Smooth sailing!
Cap'n Rick
