MEOW #58 Corner Count Off

A weekly meta crossword on the forum started by member Josh (aka madhatter5). These puzzles are often very creative with solving mechanisms out of the norm and skewing towards the more challenging. Puzzles are posted every Wednesday, and the solution appears the following Tuesday.

MEOW #58 Corner Count Off

#1

Post by whimsy »

Hello Friends -

A modest attempt to fill in for the very busy madhatter.

Get verification on Crosshare or PM here with your answers, comments or qestions.

It feels like a Kitten to me or possibly a Googley Calico.

Meta Prompt: The answer to the meta is something you may encounter. A little extra: The name of a favorite book of mine is hidden (via three separate entries) in the grid and provides a hint to the meta.

Corner Count Off - PUZ

Corner Count Off - Excel

Crosshare - https://crosshare.org/crosswords/YpPWGr ... -count-off

Have fun!

Kitty gone skitty! I managed to get to the answer, well almost, since Crosshare cannot interpolate and say -"Oh, he's so close that he got it", Darn Artificial Intelligence.

Thank you Whimsy for the pleasant diversion (and subliminally reminding me to read more!)

I'm 5/6 of the way there. Book? (check) Theme? (check) Scattered hints? (check, check, and check) Meta? (Not a freaking clue)

EDIT: Oh, wait... (confirmed with CrossHare ... one thing I don't get though)

Fun puzzle.
I guess I should change my signature, and start promoting this meta: Hungry Little Creature. I was going to sent it to people for testing but I dropped the ball on it.

Fun puzzle.
Ditto. Pleased that I’m correct, but confused about one thing, presumably the same thing as you.

Cat off the couch, in the yard, chasing… things…

Wasn’t 100% sure about my answer but putting the title and all clues together I see it makes sense. Clever puzzle!

I had to give up and reveal the answer. I had all the pieces, but never went that extra step.
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

Oops -- Sorry, Ben, for placing temptation in front of you like that! :P
I thought I'd tagged it as "Reveal in a Week" but I guess I flubbed.
Thanks for playing!

Cat is roaming free. Confirmed on Crosshare. Very nice puzzle, although the last part was a bit tricky!

I believe the sophisticated twist Whimsy added (and the tendency of us all NOT to read everything) has generated all the confusion. Whimsy's solve is rock solid, no confusion if you do it right (though I didn't). Luckily you can still get to the solve without it, but it is much sweeter with....

I wish I had been clever enough to do the right thing because my first submission was wrong! Took me a couple of swipes at the bag to finally free Felix. I really liked this puzzle.

In that case, happy to oblige --

Looking at what the first part of the title asks for will give you four of a certain thing. This thing is important!

Looking at the second two words of the title suggests doing something with those four words to get four letters.

Put those two parts together and you'll get that something you sometimes encounter when you're having a tough time solving a meta.
