Thanks @Joe Ross 🤩

I started solving my 🦖📰edition before I realized the digital was AWOL. Another winner from HEX.

Not fond of puzzles that start with indecipherable instructions.

Enjoyed. Had to resist the temptation to look up the twelve once I had a toehold ;) [spoiler/]

Need help with 12a, 14d and 16d. I have words that fit the grid but not clues.

This title should go under Cryptic, not Other…

True - but this thread was started when the variety puzzle was late being posted. Since the puzzle type (HEX Cryptic) wasn't known, it made sense at that time to put under "Other".

Not sure why 12a is on your list. It has no clue per the instructions. For 14d, the definition is the first two words at the beginning. For 16d, the definition is at the end. The wordplay portion of the clue gives a letter followed by the rest of the answer. [spoiler/]

Worth the wait!

I was mystified by the 12 unclued entries for quite some time, then the whole thing came to me in a flash.

Cool!

Since I finished the weekly meta quickly and wanted to avoid doing all the work I have to do, I decided to try this puzzle. It'll be my first cryptic. Read the WSJ Guide to Cryptic Crosswords, and I see why they're fun. But I've only figured out 5 clues so far. In the immortal words of Lloyd Bridges:

I picked a bad week to start trying cryptics....

Like any of the various puzzles, experience is a great teacher. Cox and Rathvon are the best. I think you may find their Saturday morning offering (a straightforward, non-variety type) a little easier to conquer. We post it on this site each week. Good luck and enjoy!

Tool a bit to grok the gimmick but it all came together once I did.
