MEOW #48: Ghost

A weekly meta crossword on the forum started by member Josh (aka madhatter5). These puzzles are often very creative with solving mechanisms out of the norm and skewing towards the more challenging. Puzzles are posted every Wednesday, and the solution appears the following Tuesday.

I downloaded the .puz file and opened it on my PC. No problem except that I still haven't solved the meta.

Okay then I guess it is an Across Lite issue.

AlphaCross on Android also can't deal with certain 2 letter entries especially near the bottom of the puzzle. Now I'll have to print it and fill it in with gasp pen.

Nudge Saturday!

Focus on the last word of the prompt

What do ghosts say?

If you've figured out the above nudges and have ended up with a 6-letter name but are still at sea, maybe try Googling what you have

It kinda slows you down in getting to the meta when you count to 18 on your fingers while reciting the alphabet and come up with S. And I must have made another error in the fill. Nevertheless, cat's out.
Great idea for a puzzle. I always admire puzzles when there's an AHA for the way the answer ties in with the mechanism and the title.

I laughed way too hard at 17-D, and that's all I have to share at this moment.
Less cross words, more crosswords.

Well, I understood the first two nudges but nudge 3? ..... No idea what it can refer to.
Funny story. I was all set to enter Par for the course for the CrossHare midi contest for April but I mistakenly thought midi meant 7x 7 and not 11 x 11. Oops. Well.... Here's a complex but **small** meta on the subject of golf.

Nudged out of the box. Love the meta, and there were some gems in the "not-so-elegant entries"!

I think I need a nudge to a nudge.

How on earth would I have ended up with a six-letter name?

Unless that famous frontiersmen was born after world war II and was a rude alcoholic while promoting a strictly binary way of thinking, all googling gives is "List of word...."

No not that name, another one. Think synonyms.

Solution:

You can append "BOO" to the start of each of the numbered clues:

MER -> BOOMER

STING -> BOOSTING

NE -> BOONE

ZER -> BOOZER

LEAN -> BOOLEAN

RISH -> BOORISH

Then it's the same old synonym shtick:

BOOMER -> (R)ETIREE

BOOSTING -> (A)IDING

BOONE -> (D)ANIEL

BOOZER -> (L)USH

BOOLEAN -> (E)ITHER/OR

BOORISH -> (Y)OBBISH

The answer is therefore BOO RADLEY.

No, but good for a meta. synonym shtick = cinnamon stick. Colored red and white. Stay tuned.
