Solved and submitted, but I needed all the nudges, plus a push from Cinny.

Solution to Pardon MY French
There was somewhat of a flaw in the puzzle that you kindly didn't ding me on, in that the solution nearly could have been reached just by looking at the clues. (But then you would have missed all the fun in the grid!) Elvis helped me perhaps to make it not completely so.
There were six long theme entries hinted at by the clues followed by a set of parentheses.
The numbers in the parentheses did not refer to letter locations within entries, but to the number of letters in a third alternative word for the clue/entry combos, hinted at by the entry at 6D SYNONYM. This resulted in ESS CAR GO SEA VIEW PLAY, which, in turn, hinted at by the meant-to-echo entry at 71D of HOMONYM, translated to ESCARGOT, S'IL VOUS PLAIT.
(Well, I did say
Pardon my French!)
Thanks to all for playing!

Any reason the grid wasn't rotational?

Any reason the grid wasn't rotational?
Simply because with my very limited crossword construction knowledge and experience, I couldn't have pulled off the puzzle!
