I thought this was a really cool mechanism, just needed an easier couple first steps.
Cool puzzle, though I needed spoiler #6 to get me going. The COVID hint was a bit too subtle.
I think if Ben had just worked VOWEL into the grid and clued it in a binary way ("one of two types of letters" or some such), he would have gotten several more solvers. Maybe.
