I think I got it - when best meta processing occurs - in the middle of the night.

Great puzzle idea, Mikey. Sorry for the delay in solving -- somehow it got dogpiled in my Inbox and I missed it. Destiny rules!

The five down entries above are first notable "firsts" (Mickey Mouse appearance - although technically there was a test screening of a different cartoon called "Plane Crazy" months prior - along with element, Super Bowl victor, state, and amendment). Since they're all going down, that makes the meta answer FIRST DOWN! (Groans.)

Almost forgot about this -- but here's what the real answer should be!! And the long and winding road thru the poppy field I had to take to get there.
I saw Mickey, Element, Super Bowl, Amendment, State --- spells out MESAS. Found out thru google that Mesa AZ is where Mikey G's "beloved" Cubbies have spring training. Also noticed that the many double letters in the grid from left to right create something along the lines of BELLESOFFER.
Well, I couldn't find a player named Bell that had been given some sort of offer, BUT I did find a player who did a fielding stunt with BALLS OF FIRE!
Thus, the obvious answer!! .
