On shore! Glad to finally have a puzzle that does not require specialized knowledge to solve!

Ashore!

After being on base ZIlch two weeks ago, and totally not hiTTING the target last week, it was nice to see the preCISe mechanism pretty quickly this week. Perhaps my solving skills aren't totally patheTIC. I'll have a pina cOLAda.

I think they might be, @Meg! I just hope they matched my red dress -- my mother made it and even embroidered the flowers on the yoke.
@Bob cruise director, I have only the vaguest memory that the winning word was "uncontroversial." I'm surprised my mother didn't write it down for posterity!

After a week at sea I'm happy to be on dry land. Thank goodness it's not in a dry county. AVBC Winter Solstice Ale coming right up...

Finally on the beach. Got lost down a rabbit hole and wandered around the warren for a while. A fresh look, and the answer jumped out at me.

I can only remember the word that I missed in my first spelling bee. I was in second grade and the word was PERFUME (which I spelled PUR because I was thinking of a cat). Not bad for a kid who wasn't even able to read (much less spell) in first grade.
