No, no, no. “I’m on the news this week”.

Ummmm… I’m NOT?!

(Seriously. Just realized that THIS MORNING, thanks to Jay’s post.)

Needed direct help because of the 36-A issue (and my google search did not help solve that part). Even with that last bit in place I was completely dependent upon the googs for the answer ... not something I was at all familiar with.

I agree with everyone else that this was a wonderful idea; if my popular music knowledge were a wee bit broader should have been much easier than I made it!

Dragged off the couch by a fellow muggle or I would still be there snoozing. Loved the grid, but just couldn't seem to get the meta.

Ha! Fun and nostalgic grid, but hard meta for us. We needed all the nudges to get to our Thursday -not Monday- grin. 😉

The prompt asked for the five-word completion of a well-known mondegreen. The answer is WHILE I KISS THIS GUY, which is the misheard completion to “’Scuse me,” in “Purple Haze” by Jimi Hendrix. The actual lyric is “while I kiss the sky.”

The key to solving was to find SCUSE ME. There are seven mondegreens in the grid.

The initial letters of those entries spell nothing. But the phrase “first name” appears ten times in the clues. The first names of the performers of these songs give you the answer. The first initials of the five performers of the Across mondegreens spell SCUSE, the two performers of the Downs spell ME.

One last thing — a photo of a tree and in front of it a wall that someone has painted on.

And here are the Monday Muggle Mondegreens. Thanks to all who contributed.

Matthewl: Drift Away,
Give me the Beach Boys at three months' old ...

boharr: My young daughter was fond of the Eagles. On car trips she would sing along. She asked several times that we play "the tiger song." For the longest while we were perplexed. Then once the Eagles were playing, and she said, "that's it." It was "You can’t hide your LION eyes" for Lyin’ Eyes.
Not long after we heard her croon along with "Take It Easy," singing "Look’n for MY MOTHER/ who won't blow my cover" as a replacement for "Lookin’ for a lover/who won’t blow my cover."

DrTom (from an old flame) "Penny Lane". She was CERTAIN she heard
"And he landed in my ears and in my eyes".
(Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes.)

ChrisKochmanski:
For the longest time, my wife was hearing this lyric:

Brandy, you’re a fine girl
What a good wise human being
(What a good wife you would be)

MikeyG: "Do Wah Diddy Diddy":
I'm hurt, she's mad
Wedding bells are gonna chime
(I'm hers, she's mine
Wedding bells are gonna chime)

Wendy Walker: Stevie Wonder’s “Apartheid Lover” (“my part-time lover”)

hcbirker: “adenoids, adenoids, whatcha gonna do?” (“Bad boys, bad boys,”)

BarbaraK
: “I'm just like a cat on a haunted roof". (“cat on a hot tin roof”)
“Born on a donkey to die on a donkey” (“Born on a dung heap, to die on a dung heap”)

LB800: The Beatles "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby". George sings:
"Before I got home I had an ice cream cake."
"Went out last night, didn't stay late. Before I got home I had nineteen dates".

Mark Woychick:
- Can't Bobby Love? (Can't Buy Me Love, The Beatles)
- Basketball (Nasty, Janet Jackson, substitute "basketball" for "nasty boys")

Nasty, nasty boys, don't mean a thing
Oh, you nasty boys
Nasty, nasty boys, don't ever change, huh
Oh, you nasty boys

Teamdoubletow
: “Gimme the best box... Three months old.”

Bird Lives: From Flashdance. “Take your pants down, and make it happen.” (Take your passion . . .)

FWIW, I got the idea for this puzzle when I heard the Beatles mondegreen I alluded to in an earlier comment. The song is old, but the mondegreen was new to me.
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly,
The girl with colitis goes by
.

One more:
As a child, one half of mkmf heard the Alphabet song as:
"... h, i, j , k, l, pimento, p, ... "

Thanks so much for all the mondegreens (and for teaching me a new word).... I got all the way to "scuse me" in this puzzle and didn't put the final step together. It was still a great journey and I'm chuckling at all the mondegreens. At this point the mondegreens have become the real verses to me
