Finished the grid on Thursday while waiting for family to start arriving from out of town for a weekend of celebration. Lots of beloved family and joyful honoring of a granddaughter's talent and hard work. There was no time to even glance at the meta after the arrivals started. After a wonderful weekend, I'm going to skip this intriguing meta and head straight to bed. So, Bob, I guess I didn't even make it to the ship. Maybe in the morning I can solve before looking at the Monday puzzle. Night, Muggles!

I took a leisurely swim ashore this weekend but arrived in time to raise one or two to Mr. Shenk for a clever mechanism with a few distractions scattered around.

I found Greece, Cyprus and Chad first. Thinking there would be eight letters, I went to Ethiopia. Then found Nauru. Uh oh. My head hurt. The next day, saw the crossings resulted in the same letters each way, and found Ecuador instead of Chad.Eureka!

Yes, I got it! Somehow missed the DOWN countries, got the across. Well, four out of eight, good enough for government work...

Dang it! I spent a lot of time looking for crossing countries but never thought to use the black squares. I also went down some other rabbit holes:
8 non-English words: DONAU, NORDIQUE, GRAZIE, DUCATI, MADRAS, CERO, OLE, ETE
River through Ulm and Wien and Quebec player before the team relocated to Denver: Cross Country?
Several words that just made me think of countries: GREENE: Greece or Greenland; HANGRY: Hungary; ARDENT: Argentina? ; DENSE/NORDIQUE: Denmark/Norway; UNITES: United States

Congrats to all the solvers and good luck winning the mug!

My deepest rabbit hole was finding countries in the grid by replacing a letter. OMG
Grenada, Greece, Malta, Guam, Laos, Peru, etc... - led to madness.

Looked at 3 letter country codes, 2 letter, etc...

Wow this was really tough for me this week!
