Struggling with the (numbers) and lost at sea. Would appreciate a nudge!

Had no trouble with the grid but am stymied by the meta. Thought I'd found the mechanism but to no avail... A nudge would be appreciated

DrTom wrote: Sun Nov 08, 2020 2:56 pm Very sad news about Alex Trebek, I think all of us in the puzzlin world have appreciated the cross link between Jeopardy and Crosswords/METAS. I'm not sure the game will ever be the same without him. I actually got to meet him many years ago and was like a kid with a sports hero,"Mr. Trebek, Mr. Trebek will you sign my Jeopardy T-shirt!!!

I'm sure they will get a new host, but he will never be replaced.

The Category is: WORLD'S BEST
The Answer is : Game Show Host
"Who is (and sadly, was) Alex Trebek"

My daughter met him when she tried out for high school Jeopardy (she didn't make it alas). She is distraught.
I was on Jeopardy for two shows in 1991. Alex was as nice in person as he was on TV to all the contestants. There’s a lot of stress on the contestants but he really had a great ability to put people at ease and forget about everything else and just have fun playing a game.

I've found A mechanism....just not sure it's THE mechanism. But, I'll declare on shore, or at least a sandbar.

If you’ve landed on the right beach, I think you will be sure if it this week.

Well Bob is the cruise director, but my Dad was a Boatswain's Mate:

Consider yourself piped aboard! But remember, newest crew member buys drinks on liberty and with this crowd of rowdies it could be a substantial sum!
DrTom thanks for the warm formal welcome! It's been a lot of years since such honors were part of my experience as people came aboard or went ashore! I can tell by the hashmarks on your father's sleeve that he was in a lot longer than I was! I do understand the protocol about picking up the tab ashore, but thankfully the number of newbie muggles reported by the cruise director will soften the blow.

Good puzzle. It's not a totally novel mechanism, but despite that it took me a while to realize what was going on.

I’ll declare myself on shore, but I’m not able to fully justify my submission. It’s not a guess, there’s just a piece missing (like a jigsaw puzzle with a piece buried in the shag carpet under the table). So I’ve asked Isaac to have a Crow and Tonic ready for me if I have to swim back at midnight...

Very late start on this one. I thought the grid was a bit above average in difficulty -- more than one answer came from the crosses.

But the meta eludes me. Count me distinctly on the ship. Time for one of Issac's delicious Manhattans.

Incidentally, Alex Trebek's book, "The Answer Is . . .: Reflections on My Life", is on sale at Target for $14. I bought one.

I dunno. It has been a beautiful weekend here and we have hung out with friends the last 3 days. I almost feel normal. And I almost don’t feel bad about not getting the meta. Almost.

Hope there’s still a bit of room on shore for an 11th hour solver.

I'm on shore, but only because I was carried in on a life raft of a nudge. But for that, I would still be swimming strenuously in a totally wrong direction.
