Downright Elegant

Formerly known as the “Sunday Summer Substitute”, editor Cap'n Rick now takes the helm for 'Smooth Sailing Sundays'. As The Commodores sang about Sunday morning, the SSS will focus on easier metas. SSS will also support smaller grids and will mentor new constructors on request. Puzzles released each Sunday around 8am Eastern. Nudges released same day at Noon Eastern. New constructors are welcome.

Permission to enter the harbor Captain? Sailed smoothly on Sunday with another Super Satisfying Captain Rick for three years of downright fun!

Sssolved. This was one where the first time I misread it slightly and didn't find all 5 words. Then I came back and saw it immediately.

Thanks Cap'n!

"I think I have a piece of the 5-word description!"

*reads second hint*

"Okay, so I have none of the 5-word description."
Less cross words, more crosswords.

Solve my latest "Pun of a Kind" Meta!: 133. Don't Think Twice

That third hint should help you get there, @MikeyG. ;)

Ahoy, Muggles!

The meta answers are 1) ELLE and 2) THIS WOMEN'S MAG LOVES FASHION. To solve, you first needed to notice that the 5 symmetrically-placed women, whose names all contain "elle" sounds, (17A ISABELLE, 18A GISELE, 38A ADELE, 55A MARIEL, and 58A MICHELLE) appeared on the "COVER" (see first letters of their clues) of "Elle" magazine on the dates associated with their clues. The 5-word part of the answer was actually hidden in plain sight along the left and bottom edges (i.e. "8D EDGEWISE" (Way to get words in (perhaps to a grid)) in a "downright" direction, like a 49A LETTERL (Symbol made with a downright motion). Easter eggs included 21D LOVELY (Beautiful), 26D ADFEES (MAG revenue source), and 32D ISSUE (MAG edition). I've also been trying to work SSS into all of my Smooth Sailing Sunday puzzles (like 46A).

Reveal and Adele.jpg

I created this puzzle around the same time I constructed "Down East". I guess I was in an L-ish sort of mood at the time. :D This one turned out to be trickier than expected - mostly due to a number of solvers misreading the "5-word" part of the prompt as "5-letter word". And since the first letters of the 5 women's clues spelled "C-O-V-E-R", they thought that was part of the answer. I actually accepted "Covergirl" as the publication name for one solver.

Thanks for solving, everyone! I'll be filling in for @DrTom this coming Wednesday on MEOW. Hope to see you all there!
