MEOW #181 Day Trip

A weekly meta crossword on the forum started by member Josh (aka madhatter5). These puzzles are often very creative with solving mechanisms out of the norm and skewing towards the more challenging. Puzzles are posted every Wednesday, and the solution appears the following Tuesday.

One last nudge - well actually a shove!

With 6D in mind "Gauge (like whether a word is too long)" look at, for example, 1A and 30A. Does the wording of those clues (and 6 others) give you any ideas of how you might employ 6D with the answer?

Seems that the Day Trip bus may have broken down. No more solvers since Saturday. It might be that WSJ has everyone in a tizzy?

So, one last cat released:

47 Danny K Bernstein

Pretty good turnout for a MEOW actually, and people seemed to enjoy it mostly.

THE REVEAL!
My hope was that people would see the nudge in 6D and their meta "spidey sense" would be alerted, I mean doesn't a word too long in a meta usually mean that it will give you a letter to use! But which words were they???

There I was relaying on the rather clunky wording of some clues, and symmetry, to lead you home. Each of the relevant clues had wording designed to, at least subconsciously, push you towards the shorter word. I even tossed counterculture hero Dr. Timothy Leary smack dab in the middle, ready to take his "trip" after he would...

Lot's of people guessed the answer (I am assuming most of those are from my generation) but lots also worked their way through the shortening of words. I hoped it was not lost on folks that they had to DROP letters to get to DROP ACID. In a perfect world I would have had you dropping LSD out of words to get other words that had other meanings, but that is a Gaffney/Shenk kind of magic and I am definitely not in that league.

Tomorrow's MEOW should be considerably easier, just as a heads up.
