Ahoy, Muggles!
The meta answer is "STAND UP", as in the type of comedy performed by Boston-based comedian Steven Wright who has entertained audiences for decades. To solve, puzzlers first needed to notice the 7 fill-in-the blank Steven Wright quotes among the Down clues. The first letters of the 7 corresponding "stand-up" grid entries, in left-to-right order, spelled the meta answer.
As you may have gathered, Steven is one of my all-time favorite comedians. I think I first saw him perform on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson back in the 80s. His deadpan delivery and witty quips crack me up every time. When it comes to clue-writing, I'm not as funny as say @Al Sisti, @MikeyG, or @DrTom, so I have to go the outsourcing route.
Steven once mused, "If you tell a joke in the forest, but nobody laughs, was it a joke?" Hopefully you got a few laughs out of this meta.
