"Fourth Wheel" by Wendy Walker

Formerly known as the “Sunday Summer Substitute”, editor Cap'n Rick now takes the helm for 'Smooth Sailing Sundays'. As The Commodores sang about Sunday morning, the SSS will focus on easier metas. SSS will also support smaller grids and will mentor new constructors on request. Puzzles released each Sunday around 8am Eastern. Nudges released same day at Noon Eastern. New constructors are welcome.

Thanks to all for solving and for your very kind remarks! Also thank you to Crosshare for "featuring" my puzzle!
Either on your own or from my "word problem" hints, you've figured out that you need to turn a 3-letter word into a 4-letter word by adding a letter in the same position every time. You now have 7 letters, but they make no sense. What are some ways in which you re-order them?
Good luck, fellow Muggles!

Funny how my rookie year has coincided with my work-life decision to accept only editing projects that look like they'll be fun.
Good luck, fellow Muggles!

Sssolved, after a deep dive into an empty rabbit hole:)
If you want help with a meta, feel free to PM me. The more specific you are about what you have and what you want, the more likely I can help without spoiling.

(And if I help you win a mug, I’ll be especially delighted.)

Loved that you used the same metanism that I’ve tried to apply countless times to no avail.

You and me both, Chris, you and me both! And just TRY getting that metanism out of your head once you've spotted two examples in the grid -- "Oh, come on, there MUST be more here somewhere!"
Good luck, fellow Muggles!

SSSolved, SSShakily.

"Either on your own or from my "word problem" hints, you've figured out..."

Well, no. No I didn't/hadn't. :D

Finally put it together despite still missing part of it - I'll see if I can find all of it later.

Thanks for the puzzle, Wendy!

Thank you all!

The unusually large number of O's in the puzzle is NOT relevant. Several solvers have pointed out that they look like wheels, which is true -- but that didn't even occur to me when I was constructing.
Anagramming is NOT involved.
Good luck, fellow Muggles!

I do not speak fluent Walkerese yet, so I am still a bit stumped! Think I see some loose threads, and maybe I'll be able to tie them together later!

And a final update to the leaderboard:

ZooAnimalsonWheels
Philip Chow
Anita and Steve
Tane
SJ

The meta answer to "Fourth Wheel" is PLUS ONE. Solvers had to notice that seven three-letter grid entries could become four-letter entries by the addition of a letter between the second and third letter. Those added letters, when placed in the grid order of the three-letter words, spell out the answer.

Thank you all for solving!
