Seems I forgot to do the nudges whilst struggling and failing with the WSJ, so here they come...

Nudges, in order of increasing blatancy:

1. 54 across provides you with the meta hint. But something isn't quite right.

2. Six across entries (including 54 across) have been overwhelmed by some down entries, causing them to call out for help.

3. Respond to the SOS calls. Help those poor across entries!

Scanning these pages this morning, I realized I started the puzzle earlier but never even finished the grid. I finally got back to work and finished the job. Nice one, Ben - thanks!

So’s I totally missed the SOS angle, I got the answer merely by realizing O’s were substituted for the correct letters. This was more clever than I realized it was… kudos, Ben!
