I don’t think it’s messy at all. Just a different approach.TPS wrote: Thu Aug 27, 2020 10:13 pmThis is a 100%er for sure. But you are right IMO - there is some messiness to this puzzle.JoeS wrote: Thu Aug 27, 2020 9:58 pm On shore. I like the construct. After initial stumble the solution seemed straightforward until I got to the end, and became just a little messy in my opinion. Still, this has to be right and I must console myself with something a little less than 100% surety

I posted an almost identical frustration.DrTom wrote: Thu Aug 27, 2020 11:31 pm Well DANG it! I am SURE I have the mechanism, but what I get is not an answer that I can see. I'm missing something obviously, just not sure what yet. Maybe it will look different in the morning?
No doubt that you will get it!

Ashore!
Don’t know how our puzzle artists keep coming up with such clever constructs every week - much appreciated.
Good health to you all, and may you all stay upwind of floods, fires, and ‘fections.
Take care,

On shore. A bit of an appropriate team effort this week. I got stuck in a deep rabbit hole that really looked promising until it became forced. Once re-routed, it was an excellent search and find mission. And the cherry on top that I just realized leaves me with a smile. It's fun to be in this together!!

On shore and pretty fast this week. Almost stumped on the last step but then realized it was a pretty common mechanism.

Tricky. And when I got it I wasn't sure I got it until one final subtle clue confirmed.
Ashore.

I submitted the answer you all did. (I'm sure of that)
But what if we're being "pageant"ed?
After all...72A and it is a MG puzzle.
Diet coke for me.

It's a 100%-er. There is some subtle confirmation that you won't notice until you already know the answer.Miki wrote: Fri Aug 28, 2020 2:39 am I submitted the answer you all did. (I'm sure of that)

The prompt was one thing that locked it in for me. Saying what the other was would be a spoiler.Miki wrote: Fri Aug 28, 2020 2:39 am I submitted the answer you all did. (I'm sure of that)

Definitely have the mechanism & much more, but 90% on answer & 100% on an unwelcome earworm. Stewing overnight only made the earworm burrow further.
I get the subtlety, but am finding the magnate less than magnetic. At the very least, I beat DrTom to this pun, which makes today a good day.
I'm off to donate platelets down to the local blood emporium. There is a critical need for blood & blood products, folks, not including a possible increase due to the storm. Please consider giving a gift in 2020.

On shore. Fun one - classic Gaffney and well-constructed.

I remembered 32A from putting together those Heathkit projects as a kid! The answer I'd never heard of, in addition to 33D, was 25A.Bob cruise director wrote: Thu Aug 27, 2020 9:42 pmYou need to be one of us nerdy engineersTina wrote: Thu Aug 27, 2020 5:33 pm On shore! Good luck, fellow Muggles!

On shore, dazzled by Matt's craft ... and by my ability to actually solve it, which is never a "gimme." Have a great weekend, all. (I don't often wish for a rainy one, but I live near a river that could use a drink. Walking across a waterway isn't a good look.)

It had been a few weeks since I got one on my own. It was nice to have a real "Aha!" moment.Joepickett wrote: Thu Aug 27, 2020 10:28 pmAshore!Joepickett wrote: Thu Aug 27, 2020 6:17 pm I saw the mechanism but now I have gibberish. I think I'm close.

Got the meta and first step yesterday, but still stumbling around in Step 2. Maybe a Bloody Mary will loosen something up...

Definite AHA moment on this one. it's enjoyable when you know you are close, but not 100% there, and then you stumble through the woods a little more until you find it.

Nice to wake up this morning to a fun and satisfying WSJCC, after a long day of driving yesterday.

Whew! Finally on shore.
Like others I found the first step fairly fast but everything I tried with it was gobbledygook. Then as 71A says, "I've finally seen the light!"
