Those sneaky buggers! Once you see what is going on it’s easy but usually there is a warning. That was like a mini version of a Saturday WSJ variety. I loved it!

Still missing 1A and 2D. As you say, once I caught on to the gimmick, I made really good time; then hit the wall. Took me longer than it should have because I really wanted 10A to be Camelia (but, of course, couldn't make it work). Did not know that there was a shrub called "andromeda"; so 1D had me stumped for a long time. Had to look up the definition of 1D. Had heard of the word but didn't really know what it meant.
