Mick had 2 kids on her back while grandma was taking photos.

Bearcats may be lucky to stay in top 25 with today's performance. Tulsa's run defense was ranked beyond 100th in NCAA going into the game, but we made them look like a fence, yet it didn't stop us from running the ball up the middle for 2 yards 80% of plays. The consensus in our section was that Cincinnati could easily have had 24 to 28 points in the first half, if they'd pass, occasionally.

Defense was amazing.

An ugly win beats a loss!

OMG! Paraphrasing My Fair Lady "I think he's got it, by George he's got it". If it is indeed what I believe I have discovered, and I can defend it pretty well then Mike goes directly to the Hall of Fame. Good Lord man how do you do that???? So, I'm going to count myself ashore, not proud of how I got there because I doggy paddled and then kicked some kid off his rubber raft, but sand I am.
NUDGES!I am always willing to give nudges where needed; metas should be about fun, not frustration. Send me what you have done so far because often you are closer than you think!

Ashore! (and finally registered so I can post on this site, after the transition from the WSJ site).
Brilliant construction, MIke - absolutely incredible!

My only quibble is that I guessed the characters and then backsolved. Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see much guidance that would help one guess the characters? Well, more discussion Monday for sure.

Well, ashore at last. I was able to exit that leaky boat only with a good PM nudge - no, not Boris Johnson! - a kind Muggle. I told said friend I was glad for the help so that I could spend the rest of the weekend admiring the meta, rather than the alternative. And admiring it I surely am. I agree with others that this one takes the cake- even a better cake than we had last week.

Hesitantly on shore after a lot of staring, but everything finally came together on a quiet Sunday AM.

Got the grid easily enough, but stumped so far on the meta. I'm not giving up yet though. Hoping a light comes on soon!

Still on the ship... (I think I was erroneously reported as ashore.)
This had been my longest streak ever -- 14 correct solves going back to 5July/H.G. Wells. When I began doing these however long ago, I found Matt Gaffney's metas the most challenging but now Mike/Marie gives me fits much more often.
Marge, I will be continuing on the stern garden project. Since it is well weeded, I'm thinking about putting in some bulbs for early spring color!

Many of these puzzles remind me of the book title Everything is Obvious . . . . Once You Know the Answer (a very good book by Duncan Watts). But this one is different. Even when I knew mechanism and what the answer was likely to be, it still took work to complete.

(I hope this wasn't a spoiler.)

I havenโ€™t posted in years, but worked so diligently to finally arrive at the solution, I just had to post that I am in shore! And I learned something new!
