The cat is out of the bag in an orderly fashion.

I started this way too late last night and was frustrated at once again not being able to solve an "easy" one. The mechanism leapt off the paper this morning. I am interested in the discussion to come about issues with this puzzle.

Submitted what I'm pretty sure is the right answer.

This meta marks the first time that I've had a *correct* "AHA moment" in the shower.

Nudge Saturday!

What might "Out of order" mean in a cruciverbal setting?

How does one typically order words?

The grid is irrelevant to this puzzle (sorry Bob Cruise Director)

Me too… but I’m blaming my brain malfunction on the overheating caused by WSJ this week. 😤

Nice to finally get this (thanks, nudges!) since WSJ will likely remain parked, unsolved

Cat and bag are no longer as one!

Cute Meta, POSSIBLE suspected from beginning but definitely better to solve with the PDF or Excel than PUZ!
NUDGES!I am always willing to give nudges where needed; metas should be about fun, not frustration. Send me what you have done so far because often you are closer than you think!

Ooh nice one! I totally forgot about doing this puzzle (I've been busy) and tried to knock it out today, but I didn't see it quickly and succumbed to the temptation of the Saturday nudges. Impressed by the mechanism and by those who were much more observant than I am! Thanks for sharing your puzzling talents, @madhatter5!

Hahahahaha never posted the solution. The clues were almost all in alphabetical order and the first letters of the ones that weren't spelled INOPERABLE
