Episode #319 Contest: Two By Two

#1

Post by bcimmet »

Hello solvers! There's a new contest puzzle from Fill Me In. I'll rate this one 2.2 bananas on a scale of 5 bananas. (Bananas has nothing to do with the puzzle, it's just a 1-to-5 scale we made up.)

The puzzle is called "Two By Two" and was constructed by me (Brian Cimmet). The solution to the puzzle is the name of a well-known vehicle.

The crossword can be downloaded from here. You're welcome to solve, you're even welcome to join in the chatter about the puzzle -- but if you want to be eligible for a prize, you have to listen to the podcast for this week's password. The podcast can be found on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, our own website, or wherever you collect your podcasts.

Once you've solved the puzzle, submit your answer and this week's password by email to fmi@bemoresmarter.com. You can also contact us with any suggestions, questions, comments, or ideas. Thanks for playing along!

Nice one!
Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!

I finally managed to look away from the red herrings and see the actual answer.

(And you’ll never convince me that @bcimmet didn’t put those herrings in intentionally:)

Even when I was sure I had the answer, I was parsing it wrong, wondering what it meant, when I suddenly had a giant head slapping Kas 2 moment.

Hello solvers,

The solution to this contest was NOAH'S ARK.

There was a long diagonal line of black squares through the middle of the grid, and in pairs across that line (heading from NW to SE) were the letters N-O-A-H-S-A-R-K, lined up two-by-two. As bonus hints, the entries GENESIS and FLOOD were in opposite corners as well.

There's another contest puzzle and a new post in the forum for it. I hope you give it a try!

I knew a guy when I was younger who did a bunch of community theater. His specialty role (in about 10 different productions over the years, I believe) was playing Noah in the musical "Two by Two". I've never really heard of this show outside of those parameters so I have no idea how big it ever was or if people outside of religious environments know it/stage it. But because of him, when I saw the title and the prompt my immediate, haven't-touched-the-puzzle-yet response was "I bet it'll be Noah's Ark."

So first I had to tear myself away from the pairs of automotive entries:

6A (Hyundai) GENESIS and 30A (Toyota) SIENNA
13D REMINI and 48D AUDITS
54D CARS and 61D VAN (with of course 33D BUSDRIVER)

When I did see the two-by-two letters and wrote them out NOAHSARK, I then asked myself, so who is this guy Noah Sark and what kind of car did he invent. Giant head slap a minute later.
