Solved, fun and easy. I have a Zoom algebra class on Thursday afternoons all summer, but today we finished an hour early. ~15 min total time.

Ashore!

The specter of being pageanted, as hinted in an above post, has me just slightly worried, but my answer makes complete sense.

Good one!

This is definitely the earliest I've been on the board. Safely ashore!

I'm counting myself on shore.... but I doubt myself. The answer makes sense in a couple of ways -- at least in my mind.

ok, I finished the grid on the wsj site, through playing in the new window, but I had autocheck on (very unusual for it to operate on meta day). It congratulated me for solving it in 19 minutes and the completed grid disappeared. so um...? did anyone else experience this?

unless someone wants to send me their completed grid, I guess I‘ll just chill from the sidelines this weekend.

I could always do the grid a second time, but I think that violates some international law.

EDIT- thanks Mike!! Got it!! False alarm.

Just home from bringing my son to overnight camp in Maine, so no real shot at page 1. But solved upon returning home - so ashore with my page 2 peeps!

Overcomplicated once again. But on shore at last. Hendricks Martini or some of the Michter's my son got me for Fathers' Day? Decisions, decisions! Hopefully the booze washes away the horrible song from my teen years that solving put in my head.

On the shore. Grid a little bit more straightforward, a little head scratching, then an "oh that's what the author is trying to say..." Terrific puzzle.

Submitted what seems like a reasonable answer.
