Many thanks to Josh for this opportunity and for his advice and support.
(Although I don't think it's anywhere near as difficult as he does!)
I want to say that my parenthetical comments in the clues have nothing to do with the answer; just my way apologizing for some real "dogs' of clues/entries!
As Josh says, PM me with answers, even half-baked ones --
Have fun!
Oh and of course --

Would maybe estimate Calico (Persian if a certain aspect were removed). Awesome debut, and a fun puzzle all around. Thanks, mad and congrats, whimsy!

Hey, where's the cat? Out of the bag!
Congrats, whimsy, on a fun first meta. Hopefully many more.

I think I have it! This was more of a challenge for me than for some of you. My struggles were, as usual, self-inflicted. The Excel spreadsheet really helped me see things more clearly. I even used the comment page.

This picture brought back some memories for me. During my 38 years working on fire investigations for insurance companies and as a firefighter, I dealt with three significant house fires that were caused by an inquisitive cat accidently turning on a stove. In one case the cat was trying to get into the bag - of cat food that is. The smell of the burned kibbles was the worst part of that one.
Incidentally, the cats all survived.

Cat's out of the bag, I think! Fun! One of those "I didn't see it until I suddenly did" puzzles. Nicely done, Whimsy!
