The March 14 WaPo puzzle by Evan is not a meta, but an incredible themed crossword that has it’s share of aha moments. Highly recommended!

I much preferred to solve it electronically, but with the pdf handy to remind me where there are supposed to be quadruple-sized squares rather than four normal ones.

I agree. As the note on the PUZ file suggested, I did look at the PDF to understand what was up, but then solved electronically.
