I'm finally on shore. Maybe I really do need glasses.
I went down too many wrong paths, but ended up seeing things which led me to piece it together. I thought I was completely lost at sea until I got it. Being familiar with Gaffney's style helped too.

I agree, 36D clue is a total absurdity.
Nonetheless, I am safely and happily ashore. My celebratory beverage shall remain nameless as it contains the contest answer (which I have on hand).
Cheers!

On the beach.
I wasted too much time trying to back solve. Never a good idea.
Note to self: Solve the puzzle. Do not try to justify an answer.

Fair Aeolus took pity on me. This 29-D becalmed no longer.
Pushed ashore by a marvelous wind o'er the stern. The crew happily quenching a month long thirst and chasing hula skirts.
Happy weekend O Noblest Crew!

Ahhh, now I see it. Safely ashore and sipping an alternative to the answer.

To borrow a few lines from 51A
Figuring out this meta has been like Pulling Mussels From a Shell. Tempted to put my legs up with a book and a drink (a Harold Robbins paperback). And so it's my assumption, I'm really Up The Junction. Maybe I'll get it tomorrow over Black Coffee in Bed.

On shore within minutes of completing the grid! Another delightful construction from Mr. Gaffney. Happy weekend, everybody!

On shore (hi Bob).
Isaac, close out my tab and let me buy a round for those still at the bar.

Nope. If it wasn't for MISSING LINKS and TORMENTED ARTISTS, I'd be 0 for July & August. Going back to sleep, wake me up next Thursday.
In the meantime, here's a pic of Monday's 'derecho' approaching our town. On my bike ride Tuesday morning the place looked like a war zone.
Late breaking...got it. Count me ashore.

Comfortably ashore. It was a pleasant cruise but it's nice feeling the sand between my toes.

Wow. At this point the 2020 script-writers are just messing with us.

Count me shipside, Bob. I’m not seeing a thing with the meta yet- or seeing too many things. Yes, I know I need glasses, but they are not helping me at all. Back to the stern garden to see how the crew has got that looking.
In case you need to check your vision:
Can you see me now? Hi everyone! I already have this pegged as my obit photo...

Sean, fantastic band, saw them in 1981 or so, with Flock of Seagulls as the opening act.
WLW.
Good luck, fellow Muggles!

They, or more accurately some of them, played a big party at my college graduation weekend in the interstice of their first break-up. Count me among the hordes who are sure that the very best music came out during their youth. Today's music is so much worse than when I actually sought out and listened to the best music of the day.

Not a big liqueur fan.
But, I am happy to say that, after a VERY long dry spell, I am ON SHORE! 🏖
