Whew. On vacation with my son and his family in San Mateo, so got to this very late today. Struggled with portions of the grid, but I am ashore and have to say it is a fun one. Heading back to Houston tomorrow.

On shore, after finally looking at this puzzle a few hours ago. Busy weekend but a nice finish since I was at sea for the past couple weeks.

On shore, feeling 100% right, but am a newbie so wondering how there could possibly be another answer than the obvious. It was so obvious I almost overlooked it searching for a more complicated answer.

Ouch. Kinda thought GRAPES would be the answer, but couldn't land it. Got 4 of the 6 artists (didn't get O'Keeffee or Magritte), but got RITTER (an American painter) and a blank. Obviously can't squeeze grape juice from beets! This is my world - - kinda around the answer, but . . . .

What happens in the rare case that joe doesn’t figure out the meta in time to prepare the explanation??? Shudder...

Now I'm really curious to learn why some muggles didn't think this was a 100 percenter.

He'll have someone tell him the answer & take a loss, or you wait 5 minutes for him to post the official answer (now there)!

This was a straight up "KAS 4". I was halfway there. I found the artists but didn't think to look at their first names. Absolutely kicking myself. We have seen this mechanism before, so I should have known.

The answer is GRAPES. I can't fathom alternate answers either. What's all this pageant talk about?eagle1279 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 02, 2020 10:58 pm Wow, I can’t fathom alternate answers or alternate paths to “my” answer. But I suppose that’s what happened with the pageant puzzle. Y’all have ruined any thought of an early bedtime!
(But tonight’s Endeavor finale has my adrenaline elevated even though we saw it last year and we will have to watch it again tomorrow night to figure out how all the plot lines resolved.)

I stopped at PEAR, not noticing the other two artists. Dumb mistake and I should have known better!!

GRAPES was definitely my answer, all the talk of another obvious answer had me on edge all evening

With a bit of help and a lot of Googling, I did find the artist names (not fun - the only artist name of the six that came to mind was Picasso, and I have never before heard of Degas or Magritte). It was only just now looking at the placeholder solution that I realized the name parts were split exactly at the break between the words in the answers. Of course, I needed another nudge to jump over to first names, so the rest is kind of moot, anyway.
As much money and life as you could want! The two things most human beings would choose above all — the trouble is, humans do have a knack of choosing precisely those things that are worst for them.

I really, really wanted PEAR to be the answer, too. At a certain stage I was so close to submitting it, but then couldn't convince myself that the rest of the grid was irrelevant.
