Up in Smoke

Formerly known as the “Sunday Summer Substitute”, editor Cap'n Rick now takes the helm for 'Smooth Sailing Sundays'. As The Commodores sang about Sunday morning, the SSS will focus on easier metas. SSS will also support smaller grids and will mentor new constructors on request. Puzzles released each Sunday around 8am Eastern. Nudges released same day at Noon Eastern. New constructors are welcome.

Feel better soon!

Word of the day for me. I never heard the term "summer eye" before but interwebs confirmed - yep, it's what it sounds like. And I have it as well from all the pollen
The innerwebs *did*? I completely made the term up.

I had insomnia and a type of late night dry eye and although I've never had allergies before I've been finding a lot of eye irritation sense moving to Sacramento two years ago. I thought I'd describe it as "summer eye" as it sounded descriptive.

Off to internet to see what I just claimed I had.... Hmmm... not really one thing. Anyway it was just insomnia. I wasn't trying to imply it was anything ongoing.

Well that's what I get for taking the AI response at face value without further checking:

Many thanks to ajk for nudges regarding yesterday's Gaffney puzzle so I had the time to solve this one on my own. It fell into that perfect category: "Challenging but not maddening."

Sssolved with nudges! :D
Check out "The MOAT Mini Pack of Marching Bands" here. US$5 gets you 7 Marching Bands which, hard enough on their own, now contain metas too. And once again there's a mega-meta! :D

Sssolved. You guys are really smoking up the joint!!!

Thanks for a Sunday challenge.
NUDGES!I am always willing to give nudges IF ASKED; metas should be about fun, not frustration. PM me what you have done so far, because often you are closer than you think, and I will try to help you move along.

Sssolved. Like @HeadinHome, I surmised the answer right away but had to ponder a bit for the meta. (One of the clues, which isn't part of the solution, should be retooled to avoid confusion.)

Finally sssolved after a private nudge from Wendy. I was definitely stuck in a major rabbit hole, or perhaps, more descriptively, rabbit labyrinth.
