MEOW #229 The Real Menace

A weekly meta crossword on the forum started by member Josh (aka madhatter5). These puzzles are often very creative with solving mechanisms out of the norm and skewing towards the more challenging. Puzzles are posted every Wednesday, and the solution appears the following Tuesday.

Finally freed! The cat was trying to get out of the wrong end of the bag. Did a 180 and there was the opening.

Well shucky darn, I thought this would be a real romp in the park but instead I seem to have taken folks to the dark side, let me try to nudge you back into the force...each one should bring you a bit closer to getting your own light saber in order to slay this monster.

A LOT of people have submitted only the first part, the explicit part of 2 words and of course they were correct. But the answer is the 5 word phrase so the second part is needed. Neither Crosshare nor I give partial credit

I mentioned I was watching Wheel of Fortune, but the type of puzzle specifically was one of the "Before and After". If you are not familiar with those a quick Google may help.

The explicit part is the first two words of the final answer

Remember that Luke was a, arguably THE, Jedi Knight in later years.

If you are still stuck try Googling the name of movies in the Star Wars franchise. You can stick with the original six and you can obviously eliminate one of those because I'd NEVER be that obvious as to almost include the spoiler in the title.

Um... but none of those nudges actually are about how to solve the meta in the first first place.

Exact opposite.

All this talk of explicit and made me know the form and idea and a wild guess in about 15 minutes (which surprisingly worked) But it wasn't until after that that I had any clue whatsoever how to derive the explicit part and that eluded me for two days. (Some nudges on *that* might be useful but I can how one might forget them)

Pretty funny and clever.

I think the nudges got my cat out! :D
Check out "The MOAT Mini Pack of Marching Bands" here. US$5 gets you 7 Marching Bands which, hard enough on their own, now contain metas too. And once again there's a mega-meta! :D

Ah, but a Meti Knight doesn't do wild guesses, they feel the "force" pushing them in the right direction! So glad you were able to light saber your way through the underbrush.

I think I just don't have the cultural knowledge required to solve this meta. Based on 71A I even resorted to consulting IMDB for the first names of the actors who played characters referenced in the clues but that's not getting me anywhere. I've only seen IV - V - VI a very long time ago, and I couldn't tell you the plot if you asked me (when I read snippets of commentary I always think, was that in the movie I watched?). I also saw the one where young whatshername swoons over young "oh, Anakin, Anakin!" when it came out, but the bit I quoted is all I remember. I think there are some spaceships, and a bad guy, or maybe a bunch of bad guys, and some furries, and some robots? And a bar scene with that thing from the Mucinex commercials.
I don't have anything clever to say, but if I did, it would go here.

This sums up my knowledge of the series very well  - and my status on solving. Except I knew fewer details than that. The good doctor prescribed some extra-strength nudges this morning; I'll chew on those awhile.

Well I asked an umpire what I should do because it seems this is a lot harder than I anticipated and people are assuming a need for a lot more SW knowledge than is necessary. Anyway the umpire struck back with these further nudges:

There are nine letters in the first two words, so you need to find 9 "themers" for the "explicit" part and come up with three more words for the rest. The last three are only loosely Star Wars related and are more related to the "Before and After" mentioned earlier

I tried to make the theme answers pretty blatant, they are worded to leave no doubt that the clue relates to Star Wars. Don't try to think like, "well she dated a guy who lived near George Lucas so that must be one", or "there is a C in that clue a P in that one and an O in that one and there are three of them so C3PO". Read them and you should have no doubt which are theme clues/answers (note I am emphasizing CLUE a lot!!!)

I had to have help extracting the cat, but finally the bag is ripped to shreds and the nudge-bruised feline has escaped.

A few more return to Alderaan after a vigorous battle with a bag:

34 MountainManZach
35 KayW

Unfortunately, experience has taught me that 35 is likely to be the end number. But hey, I liked the idea even if it was not universally popular...of course I'm a Star Wars geek.
