OTH couch. Excellent meta. And some of the clues will even bring a smile to Chief's fans

Awards for these clues
5A - do they celebrate that in high schools any more and does anyone under 50 know where that comes from
26A - my brother and I had fights with these - in the house when our mother was not home and amazingly no one got an eye out
30A - LOL
43A - Peter - did you really know this?
12D - I have never seen a clue with "thingy" in it - LOL
13D - great clue - LMAO
32D - another great clue
45D - a third one

fun meta and thanks

Off the couch with, per the comment on crosshare, extra credit.
If you want help with a meta, feel free to PM me. The more specific you are about what you have and what you want, the more likely I can help without spoiling.

(And if I help you win a mug, I’ll be especially delighted.)

Fun fact -- in 1970-something when I was a freshman in high school, my mom found a senior who could drive me the 13+ miles to school (small private school, no bus service). He drove a 1960 Chrysler New Yorker with fins and a push-button transmission and man, was he proud of it! It looked something like this:

OTC. Enjoyed the clues and the solve. The middle of the grid was tricky for me.

My eight-letter answer was officially incorrect. But considering the constructor, I think it might be appropriate.
