I'm originally from an area about that's about halfway between Des Moines and Des Plaines. Yep, both are not pronounced like their French origins, and each one is different. DEE MOYNE and DESS PLANES.
And don't even get started on place names in New Orleans.

I’m guessing you’re from the QC then?
Exactly! Born in Moline, lived in Rock Island until I moved to New Hampshire.
If I'm around, I am willing to join the Muggle Zoom room at other times to lend a hand to those in need.

ok, now I can post this- does anyone else outside of the Chicago area know what DES PLAINES is? Not the first time I've seen it in a puzzle... and if there was some other random suburb of another city, I'd have no idea.

LOL, Barbara-What is the record for consecutive posts?
When you say consecutive posts, what do you mean? submissions of being on the ship or shore?
I was kind of kidding, but when I noticed that I posted three times in a row in this thread I posted a fourth time with the question. Consecutive entries in a thread.

Then again, I've heard of Tonawanda too, since I used to get WKBW late at night when they were late night radio (50K watts strong!) when I grew up.

Nice! My parents are from Davenport, and I lived in Bettendorf for a few years after college.

I've been a print subscriber (yes, INK ON DEAD TREES, live with it) since 1984.
I love my dead tree WSJ! When I don't get a paper and call to report it, they always point out that I can read it online. It's not the same!! If I wanted to read it online, I wouldn't pay for a print subscription!!!

I am the same way - I like to wake up and read hard copy papers with my tea.

Same with me except with coffee. Speaking of which (the WSJ, not coffee), I did not get mine today!

and ... yes, trees are not just renewable, but the ones used for newsprint are fast growing, so in effect, I'm practicing carbon sequestration.
Take the flattened trees, use for bird cages, dispose in landfill. There - carbon extracted from atmosphere and buried, to be future coal/etc.
Fun fact:
U.S. forested land acreage has increased (slightly, but measurably) over the last hundred years.

First big concert for me was the R.E.M. Monster tour in 1995. Saw them twice, once at the Rosemont Horizon and once at World Music Theater.
Haven't thought of the World Music Theater in years--decades, actually. My husband (boyfriend at the time) and I saw U2 there back in the early 90's.
