@Conrad The other nightmare that you did not mention was the cruise ships. Bar Harbor has a population of 5,000 and gets overwhelmed when a cruise ship dumps 2000 passengers in town. And the shoulder season is much nicer

Great point @Bob cruise director. Portland also gets cruise ships (Bar Harbor is usually the next stop), but Portland's bigger. Old Port gets pretty busy, but the crowds thin out once you get 4-5 blocks away. So when we're in town my wife and I head to the west end, or Monument Square, etc.

Just before boarding the plane, I got reassurance from @BarbaraK that I had, in fact, started down the correct path. So I pressed forward and had the “A ha!” moment at 30,000 feet.
