I 100% second the nomination of M and M for the Golden Rabbit award.
For the record, my first guess was "Asparagus," but you have to write it really small to fit it into four grid spaces.

The contest answer is ALSO. Homophones of each theme answer can satisfy another clue. For example, “Some person chosen at random” (8-Down) clues ANYONE but also “so-and-so.” Similarly: “With enthusiasm” (9-Down) clues LIKE MAD and “through and through”; “In a while” (36-Across) clues SOON and “by and by”; “With increasing frequency” (43-Across) clues OFTENER and “more and more.” In grid order, the first letters of the alternate answers spell the contest answer.
We thought this was an ingenious puzzle that only a black belt could have constructed: 4 answers in the form x + x, fitting in symmetrical pairs, with homophones woven into the grid, whose initials spell out a perfectly apt word. We had a good turnout with 1,340 entries, and the success rate --75%--was right at our typical level.
Among incorrect answers, a big vote for ECHO (123), plus YOYO (13), DEAR (9), SOFT (5), COPY (5), SOON (4) and sundry others.
Congrats to this week's winner: Abram Sanderson of Redmond, Wash.!

Just looked at the answer to this puzzle and realized I was ashore! Didn't think a scrambled "Also" fit tightly enough with "You can say that again" so I thought I was off! Oh well, but also I'll take it.

Following a common pattern for metanisms, those found letters in grid order spell ALSO.will j wrote: Thu Jul 18, 2024 7:57 am Just looked at the answer to this puzzle and realized I was ashore!
