Ashore. At least it seems so. Have to agree with those that are sure they have a defensible path to the meta, but the answer seems not to fit.

Took a hint and a lot of googling -- never watched much TV or even popular movies, but I think I'm ashore.
If I have solved the Puzzle, feel free to ask for a nudge. Always willing to pay it forward.

You can COunt me.....on the ship. Fortunately, Isaac is in full coMMand of the ONBoard gang of muggles trying to figure out this pUZZle--he is keeping us well plied with icy beverages. But now it is onwARD to the patriotic pops concert at one of our local universities. Perhaps inspiration will strike like it did last year.

Thought I was starting a new positive streak with last week's meta. Not to be. Back with Isaac!

Ashore. As I was regaling my husband over dinner with the various holes I had been in, I made another guess at what the title might mean. This time I was right, and together we found the answer. It’s helpful having a solving partner, even a reluctant one at that! As others have commented, this was a classic metanism.

On shore with a lot of help (basically carrying me) were @MaineMarge and @Wendy Walker

Needless to say, my email "sent" file will not include one to the WSJ this weekend.

I can't believe it took me so long! Third time's a charm I guess. I sat down with it again just now, and solved it in a couple of minutes.

I’m declaring myself on shore but the comments here don’t fit with my experience. So I’m nervous. Excited for the real answer. FWIW, I only figure these out about 35% of the time, but I don’t think I’ve ever submitted an answer that turned out to be wrong. (I have a theory for the title. Looking forward to explaining myself if this is the rabbit hole others described!)

I couldn't even find a minute to look at the puzzle until midnight last night. Got the grid, but am stuck on what only might be step one. With only 24 hours to work on it, and rumors of a lot of Googling involved, I'm afraid I'll have to spend my time at sea on other things, unless lightning strikes in a dream tonight...
Bespoke nudges available upon request (if I'm on shore, off the couch, in the castle, petting an un-bagged cat, ...).
Let me know how small or large a hint you want, or hit me with a specific question(s).

Made it to shore last night with some help - haven't really earned a visit from the cabana boy... but I am in need of some hydration!
