MGWCC #834 — Friday, May 24th, 2024 — “World Traveler”

THIS WEEK’S INSTRUCTIONS:

This week's contest answer is a 7-letter word pertaining to travel.

Good luck 🍀 !

Beamed at #18 after a helping hand from Heading Home. In my opinion this is a top 10 puzzle in Matt’s pantheon. 🏆
The site is just a web page, a meeting place, a clubhouse - it's the group that's special.

Beamed at #44. Not solo. Lots of steps, befitting the lateness of the month.

Partnered with @Cindy for a fun solve. #8 on the board. Clever for sure. Curious what others' solving processes looked like.

Beamed!

With help from the Discord discussion.

Could I have gotten this one all on my own? Maybe … but very doubtful. And I might have tortured over it all holiday weekend. So I’m thankful for the “group solve” options we have.

Oh, and yes, this is an AMAZING puzzle. All praises to Matt G., who truly must be some kind of mad genius. In a good way!

This was an ideal group solve. I worked out all the pieces on my own (well, except needing help finishing the grid ), but the general constraints from the group discussion were vital in pointing me towards specific objectives. Would still be working otherwise.

#17 may be the highest spot I’ve had even though I feel like that took forever. A really tricky one, and unless you notice the key thing, you will be staring at this for a looong time. Fortunately a little comment on Discord sent me checking something out, and voilá.

Beamed at #57. Grid was brutal but an impressive construction by Matt.

Hmmm....

I think I've probably noticed the key thing but no idea what to do with it
So I just plain couldn't get my meta based on "Up the Down Staircase" to work.

My challenge it to constructors is to make a meta where the meta, theme or metanism is "Up the Down Staircase".

Submitted what has to be it but I don't understand one thing, maybe two things. Okay I probably shouldn't have submitted but I'm pressed for time this weekend and still haven't gotten the WSJCC :-)

Edit: #63, I’ll take it!

50A! Beamed into the Lanthanoids and happy with that. I needed help from google to get there. I recently saw a puzzle with a similar mechanism but this meta is unique. How does Matt come up with this stuff?

Good lord! That was convoluted!

Well, maybe not the most convoluted week 4 but this is probably the puzzle the puzzle that makes the most use of, and most intricate use of SPOILER aspect of meta solving.

Dear Solver,

The clue for 57-Across in this week's meta is erroneous. The corrected clue should read: [Pitcher Ruhle or interior designer Yip].

Not meta-related; just an error.

--Matt
I was going to comment on this, but that would have involved acknowledging I knew who or what a Jim Varney is. I intend to go the grave ignoring and denying the existence of such.
