Funny how I go from being lost on Monday or Tuesday, open it up today, and see the unmistakable almost instantly. Time to work on next steps!

Edit: Next steps worked on and off the couch! I'll be back on it soon, though, don't worry.

What a difference a day makes!

Ahoy Muggles!

The meta answer is "Abridge", a 7-letter word meaning to "shorten", or per the instruction at 70A, to "DROP A" from the beginnings of seven symmetrically-placed Across entries that start with the letter "A" (i.e. 1A ASWAN, 20A ASCOTS, 35A ASIDE, 40A AMOUNTS, 43A ACORN, 58A AVENUE, and 71A AGATE). This resulted in seven "different" words ("What A Difference!") that, you guessed it, could be the answers to seven other clues.

The first letters of the original answers to the seven alternate clues, in grid order, spelled the meta answer.

After I solved @ajk's SSS meta last Sunday - "What Lies Beneath", I laughed out loud. I know that some conspiracy theorists suspected collusion, but I can honestly say I was not aware of the similarities of our two puzzles. Now Mr. @Abide, on the other hand... :D

Thanks for solving, everyone!

Until next time,
Cap'n Rick

PS - I'll try to remember to post photos of our new kitchen when the project is finished - hopefully sometime in October.
