More nudges!

4. The clue for BREATH almost included some reference to the fact that people often misspell it by adding an E to the end.

5. Something has been removed from the outer limits of the grid.

6. That something is a word: the same 4-letter word, many times!

7. That 4-letter word is the last 4 letters of the adjective.
Less cross words, more crosswords.

I found my way to the answer. I needed even more assistance than Mikey's spoilers. Very interesting construction.

I'd say at least once every 10 puzzles are so, I try to push the boundaries of construction. This one is admittedly a little more lateral and avant-garde than most. But you persevered!

Shoves:

8. A four-letter word can be added repeatedly to the outside border of the grid (turning the puzzle into a 14-by-14). In doing so, this will eliminate the 2-letter words and the repeat fill...well, except for the word itself that's added many times!

9. This word starts and ends with an "E."

10. This 4-letter word is the last four letters of the 11-letter adjective, which is hyphenated.

11. The first letter of the adjective is a "C"

Up to 37 so far, so certainly a Week 3.5, at least.

Laboriously, and using up to spoiler 5 in the end I managed to cross the finish line (which by the way is not the one just outside of Kolari) battered, bruised, and humbled by the elegance of the construction. Damn son, that was GOOD!

FINALLY!! Brilliantly constructed, Mikey… was ahead of all but one or two of the nudges, but just could not seal the deal. Very clever to have conceived this and nailed the construction… thx!

Had to be dragged kicking and screaming (almost) but made it home at last. Quite a brilliant construction.

Got part of the answer a while ago but needed the nudges to find the rest. Great construction, Mikey!
