BWAAAAHHH!!! Solved and submitted after my third dog walk of the day. What I thought HAD to be step one was indeed a cruel rabbit hole— big credit to my sister for seeing the real deal. Man alive, it was hard to get a foothold on this one. Cheers, everyone! May we all bat a thousand in 2023.

Ashore! Finally! Sneaky meta. Very sneaky.

Finally tugged to shore by the Muggle community! I'm new to the game, but I've heard there's Guinness awaiting? :)

I like it better, Mr. Gaffney, when you hand me a bouquet of roses for my outstanding brillance.
Pour me another Isaac, make it to go please. I am retiring to my room, defeated, to have a good cry.

I did not choose wisely with my plea for a nudge. Anyone around who can throw me a lifeline?

Thanks to those who answered my plea, but looking at the answer I realized it was just not going to click.

I was on an entirely different track. I was looking for sequences within the themes that had equivalents elsewhere in the grid, differing by one letter. That obviously didn't work. And the halal/harlal juxtaposition drove me crazy. Oh well....

Kas 5 for me. I was nowhere close. Thought for sure I needed to find ROOMs! On Saturday I found MARCOPOLO could make CLOAPROOM — CLOAK ROOM to get a K. And all of the other designer or art type things distracted me — Nehru jacket, polo shirt. Coco in Marco Polo and Blass in glass jars.
Is there anything to indicate I should look for alphabetical strings? Que sera, sera.

Glad to see the 49ers win yesterday, my former team. And was rooting for the Bengals tonight. (one of the few times 😀)

Um…Kay. I think Pete Best. Would never critique a meta creator. But I would have pulled a muscle reaching that far.

Hats off to those more limber than I!

HEART was spelled out when put in the parenthetical number order, plus it relates to "interior" in the title, and the NO was the heart/interior of M-NO-P, STU was the heart/interior of R-STU-V, etc.

For the record I’m 44 and got the STU reference. :)

I almost also submitted EARTH instead of HEART and I’m glad I checked my work before submitting.

I cannot believe that 39A's inner letters being an anagram of "A NARWHAL WHALE" or "NARWHAL WHALER" if you change just one letter to W was completely irrelevant! What are the chances?!

I am dead.

Only that Gaffney re-ordered the long clues with the intent (I think) of making the alphabetical sequencing marginally more apparent.
