#680 - "Split Decision"

An excellent puzzle written by one of the innovators of the meta crossword format. It comes out every Friday at noon and increases in difficulty throughout the month. Available for modest subscription (worth every cent) here: www.xwordcontest.com

Got it - #78. Right in the meaty part of the curve. Not showing off, not falling behind.

Puzzles should make you smile from ear to ear. That's exactly what this one did.

That was fun. And funny. Beam me up. I’m still at sea with the WSJ, though.

Wow. I have been staring at this one for a loooong time. I see what the title means, but no idea how to answer the meta from what I have. Do you solvers think this will come by continuing to stare, or should I just humble myself again and ask for a nudge?? Maybe there’s a knowledge of something I don’t have, or a mechanism you quick solvers knew of that I’ve never seen before? Just don’t want to waste my time if I’m not going to get it the normal hardworking ways! :?

O wait.. I’m seeing a pattern …. Nobody nudge me yet!

YEP - got it. Ho - lee - cow. SOOOO many rabbity dead ends, but the way is clear now!

Beam me up. YAY! Now I can get to my Saturday work!
The other Wendy.

Nothing like a getting up on a bright sunny morning, having a hot cup of coffee and solving the meta in 10 minutes after staring at it for almost an hour the night before.

So many possible roads and I feel like I've been down all of them. But I'm stumped! Hoping for post-enlightenment.
Happy to give nudges. If you notice I've solved, please tell me about avenues you've explored so I can nudge you in the right direction and not off a cliff.

I'm obviously missing something straightforward. Turns out that feels a lot like missing something complicated.

I think I'm in the older group of solvers and so enjoy solving puzzles for at least minor reassurance that my brain still is working. My confidence was shaken by this last puzzle...I needed a couple of nudges to see the first step, which I really should have seen right away.

Same experience here, with slight modifications:

Nothing like getting up to judge a rib contest, having a cold beer and solving the meta in 10 minutes after staring at it for almost an hour the night before.

Definitely have the start of this, but can’t see how to bring it home. Anyone willing to listen to my reasoning?

ETA: got it - @hcbirker got me that last little bit of the way there - thanks to all who offered help.
