The answer to this week's Matt Gaffney special is a U.S. State Capital that should be in the grid but isn't.

So we have a 1 in 50 chance of being right.

Good luck

I can't get the print preview to show the grid - just headers saying "The Wall Street Journal" and then blank space beneath.

I'm on the beach, but if the Guinness is gone, I blame myself.

Thank goodness I saw the right path in a reasonable time, because I could well have been stuck all weekend ... and that is NEVER pretty! I would have taken my clipboard to the state track meet (nephew is running!!) and totally annoyed everyone around me.
Good luck, fellow Muggles!

I went down some loooooooong and empty rabbit tunnels (so unnecessary!) before the meta just jumped in front of me. I am on shore.

Made it to shore (I think). As Bob has pointed out, a 1 in 50 chance has got to be lucky for somebody!

Finished grid quickly, then had the meta, um, a meta, er, the meta answer 10 minutes later, but I couldn't trust it. Newbie jitters.

It makes sense, is 100% defendable, and I agree that it's clever. I've submitted and claim a seat at the bar.

On shore with Guinness reinforcements.

Created some complicated rabbit holes before seeing the light. May have been preemptively psyching myself up for Matt’s week 4

I'm *much* too mature to snicker over _ _ A & _ _ D sharing space. Maybe after a few more mugs of Warsteiner...

Interesting word, 'Gaffneyesque'. I agree! Managed to get it after a few wrong starts.

Still at sea. But not sweating it yet. With the long weekend approaching, it's getting me into relax mode, staring at this grid and hoping for inspiration.
