Got it. One of the themers has me a little confused, but otherwise great puzzle from a constructor which we don't see enough of.

On shore. Took awhile to catch on this time around. Slightly higher degree of difficulty; or perhaps just a long week... Destihl beer garden now open again so it's Amra Mango IPA time.

It is usually random, but Mike Miller commented on some threads last month that they were intentionally trying to make the February contests easier to attract a wider audience and that March's would be harder. So, last month all being on the easy side was not random.

On the beach. The grid took me more time than anything else. Nice training meta!

Hello, fellow Muggles! I'm an Audience Interaction Producer at the Journal and I wanted to let you know about a project we're working on. The puzzles team is currently developing a how-to course that will slowly teach new puzzlers how to find the weekly contest's meta answer. All four of the contest puzzles from February will be included in that course, and that may be why this week's contest may seem a bit easier than usual for seasoned puzzle-contest fans. But don't worry, each week our editors will increase the contest's difficulty to ease new solvers into the world of contest puzzles. Good luck to you all and keep an eye out for the crossword contest course coming soon.

Onshore - Had the meta a while ago but the grid kicked my butt. I really enjoyed some of the creative clueing but it definitely was not easy for me.

Solved after getting a bit more than halfway through the grid. Not terribly motivated to finish the grid, which has a bit more short fill than I would have liked. [Oops, I almost started listing it because I'm having flashbacks to the NYT Xword blog where they don't worry about spoliers.]

On shore. No boat ride this week (rats). Grid tougher than usual, and I still have an empty letter pending a visit to Dr G.

On the beach. Another answer before the grid was filled in.
No Guinness for me, I'll have a Black Sand Porter along with the distinct aroma of pakalolo emanating from one of the nearby apartments.
It's going to be very crowded on the beach. I think I'll head over to Makapuu where there's a lot more space.

Joe Ross says Peter Abide created it. Thanks, Peter!

I bet I have the same empty grid space.
Anyone care to PM me so I can confirm my answer? Always worried when they look too easy . . . .
Update: Confirmed.

And, it's another tactic to teach the new people.Mister Squawk wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 8:05 pm Ashore.
IMO not quite as easy as the last four, but no pageant either.

On shore. This seemed like a little more difficult mechanism, but luckily I caught on to it quickly. So maybe it's not that hard. I liked it though.

Wow...nice to be onshore so quickly after expecting the level of difficulty to increase with the new month. I am not complaining, though!
