I was a bit late starting this one as I just got home from a real beach. Went straight to the .puz on my phone before starting up the printer. Sounds like I missed some drama.

I'm on the virtual shore. I enjoyed this one.

Hope everyone who was visited by Ida is safe!

Hello, Muggles! Taylor from WSJ here. I'm very sorry about the delay you may have seen with today's contest puzzle. I've been traveling this week and got my time zones mixed up. Best of luck to you all this week uncovering the meta!

Quick trip to shore this week, once I was able to access the puzzle. I guess that means I need to get back to my projects.

Obviously the WSJ wanted me to get the final chapter of this palliative care textbook edited: By 4:15 I got tired of hitting "refresh" on the puzzle page and got back to work. I'm now onshore! We got 8 inches of rain yesterday here in eastern Pennsylvania from Ida. Mark and I are fine -- not so much our low-lying neighbors, unfortunately.
Good luck, fellow Muggles!

Now that was cute! A good one to hand to my kids whom I am trying to pull over to the dark โ€” er โ€” meta side.

Happy to be on the shore on a day with far less heat than a week ago. Can fall be around the corner? Please??
The other Wendy.

I thought some of the grid was a little tricky, but it all made sense in the end. Congratulations to everyone who solved it before it was even posted.

Solved and submitted!

Later edit: As an Aussie, I panic when the puzzle title implies that the meta mechanic might require very US-centric knowledge!

Check out "The MOAT MEOW Mashup Pack" here. US$10 for 14 metas that don't always abide by the "rules" of the game: asymmetry, 2-letter words, uncrossed letters, who knows. And this time there's a mega-meta!
