We have obviously overlooked S&G's much more apropos tune, The Solver!

I am just a Muggle, though my story's seldom told
I have squandered my insistence
On a pocketful of nudges, some are promising
Others lie in jest. still, a man sees what he wants to see and overlooks the rest

When I left dinner and my family, I used a common ploy
Sought the company of solvers in the quiet of an online nation, running scared
Laying low, seeking out the smarter answers
Where the seasoned solvers go
Looking for the good hints only they would know
Try try try, try try try try try try try
Try try try

Jill from the Isle of Wight 🏝
Stared at the meta all night
wondering what she did wrong
but then, “oh I know that song!”
now she’s ashore with a Sprite

Bill from Ile de la Cite 🏰
wondered what led him astray
first he started to pray
it became clear as day
now he’s on shore and devil what may

Sue from Asheville, NC
the solution she just couldn’t see 🔬
so she went for a run and returned
it was done!
now she’s on the shore with sweet tea

Sam from Coeur d’Alene
is always considered quite keen
but the meta was tough
yet he had the right stuff
and he swam to shore for a Jim Beam 🥃

Ed from NOLA measures the sea
oh, some metas he’s solved two or three
he cannot tell you how
see he’s solving it now!
now look at that face full of glee 😃

life is one of those things
you can’t really predict what it brings
though it can have its struggles
it also has Muggles
to boost up our spirits on wings 🦋

stay well everyone!! see you Thursday!

Yeesh… Well, I printed a new puzzle and re-solved it, so to speak. While I can definitely say that I noticed something this time around which had somehow totally evaded me before, and that I have an idea of a meta answer that would probably fit, I’m still in the web-untangling stage. (No intentions of trying to submit anything this week, obviously. I’d just really love to crack it before the solution goes up.)

(To be clear, the web yet to be untangled is my own interpretation/perception of the grid, not the grid itself (or the mechanism, etc.). I fully believe everyone who’s noted how simple it all becomes once you see it; I think at this point I’m just stuck in that whole “can’t see the forest for the trees” mire. Looking forward to putting this week’s CC behind me!)

nah brah - it’s a rural thing! it means its in your area of expertise. I only learned it recently too. a wheel house is a thing on farms. or riverboats. or something.

oh whoops you were asking about the but. yo no se.
Well, "wheelhouse" is essentially a synonym for "pilot-house" though it has also been used to refer the encasing on a paddle wheel, the area of a mill where the wheel that is powered by water is housed, and even (we're talking 200 years ago) a place where wheels are stored. Though nowadays it is probably only used to refer to a person's strength or field of expertise.

But... I did think the question was regarding the "but." And any proper grammarian will tell you, it's spelled with an ellipsis: "But..." Ending a sentence with "but..." and leaving off the unfinished part in order to indicate that there are potentially many other possibilities which you can imagine for yourself, is quite common and not particularly regional.

At least it is in my experience, but...
Can't help thinking of Mark Twain's reports of his hilarious conversation's with his riverboat captain mentor.

Have become a utiliser of that "end of the sentence" ellipsis. Even read up on em and learnt (from one source) that there should be double spacing between those "dots". :-)
I can confirm that there should be a space between the “dots” if you’re working in MLA (and I *think* APA as well and possibly even Chicago, but I’d have to double check those). There are also specific rules about how to space / format ellipses depending on what its function is in the sentence or quotation (i.e., I believe the spacing used when quoting lines of poetry is different than in a scenario such as the one under discussion here).

(That said, whenever I’m writing anything informal online (in texts, on IG, etc.), I tend to forgo punctuation “rules” for the effect. The “but” not followed by ellipses would sound different than “but . . .,” in other words.)
