MEOW #23: That's Not Funny

A weekly meta crossword on the forum started by member Josh (aka madhatter5). These puzzles are often very creative with solving mechanisms out of the norm and skewing towards the more challenging. Puzzles are posted every Wednesday, and the solution appears the following Tuesday.

Fun! Fun! Fun!

The cat is out of the bag at last. I worked on this on and off all week. I did not get a few of the pun and made one up that was not there which made solving the meta a little more difficult than it should have been.

The cats are out of the bag, and are happy to be back at their day job. It’s a race every morning to get the bed made before this happens.

Well, as the cannibal cooking up the statisticians said, “every griddle thing counts!”

Just in case, I want to mention that all MEOW puzzles (well except Crosswordese, but that one was different) are unrestricted so you can always reveal the solution to the grid.

That feature can really come in handy sometimes.

OK -- I guess I can play the nudge game now --
Does this fit the constructor duo or what

And the icing on the cake --the little (Margaret) Cho just above the flask.

LAST MINUTE NUDGE:

A little boy asks him Mom:
”Mommy I don’t understand the Meta?”
”Don't worry dear", she answers, "you will when you are, well ....older”

I know that doesn’t seem like a nudge dear solvers but it is!

OK all of you intrepid solvers, we had quite a response to the puzzle, lots of solvers (over 30) and apparently a lot of people who liked our incredibly punny collaboration.

If one went through the puzzle you noticed that ALMOST all of the entries were something “funny” except for 5. That is where the title of the META is actually the first nudge, “That’s Not Funny”. If you took the 5 non pun/humorous answers (and if you got more that 5 we are shocked and hurt!) and used their first letter you got the sound that probably escaped your lips some 70 times during the solve:

G R O A N

SOLUTION – COURTESY OF JOE ROSS

Thanks to all who played, even if you did not get the answer we hope you had a few chuckles. Oh, and feel free to steal a few of these and sprinkle into your next conversation…."Excuse me is that a picture of a native Alaskan...."

Good puzzle indeed. Solved after the Zoom call and before coming here.

Maybe you could explain the last minute nudge (post #50) now?
The site is just a web page, a meeting place, a clubhouse - it's the group that's special.

EXACTLY - how could I have resisted one more pun/word play?

This comes from something I sent a solver....I hate to see a grown man groan, man.
