MEOW # 17: It's Been a While

A weekly meta crossword on the forum started by member Josh (aka madhatter5). These puzzles are often very creative with solving mechanisms out of the norm and skewing towards the more challenging. Puzzles are posted every Wednesday, and the solution appears the following Tuesday.

The cat is out of the bag! I did not see it last night. The answer appeared to me this morning. It was more of a DOH moment than an AHA one to be honest! Fun.

I am glad that Josh specified that the vampire in 43D was fictional! I did appreciate 43D and 44D being next to one another.

I don't believe that this is a spoiler of any kind. I made a short run down a rabbit hole connecting 37D, 49A and 43D with 44D as a supporting clue.

Thanks, I got a PM nudge from a kind Muggle and believe I've let the cats out.

Update: Confirmed. Thanks for the puzzle!

Cat confirmed to be out of the bag... enjoyed this one! A nice tough grid. If anyone enjoys tougher grids, the daily WSJ today (Thursday) was a good challenge, and the gimmick is cute (and a nice entertainment for felines, too).

Cat's out as well, confirmed. Challenging grid, satisfying meta.

Note that 46A in this grid is a variant on the usual spelling. That threw me quite at bit.

Is it okay to have submitted with this portion of the grid completed?

Joe, do the X's indicate filled-in spaces or not-filled-in spaces? (I have the same trouble trying to reserve movie/concert/theater seats online! )
Good luck, fellow Muggles!

Filled-in, SVP.

Had a roommate who was a master carpenter. One night he laid-out three floors of a building to have a new-to-him framing crew frame-in the interior walls, the next day as he finished another project.

He nailed-down the baseplates & marked the studs with a line & and an X, with carpenter crayon, like so:
IX____________IX____________IX____________IX__

The crew put the studs on the wrong, non-Xed side at every spot.

I bought beer & pizza that night.

At a movie theater where you select your seats when you buy tickets, I failed to note the small print indicating front and back and wound up sitting so close to the screen that had it been Covid time then, my distance from Saoirse Ronan would have been illegal.

I am driving cross country visiting sons and during a 7-hour drive today, the answer just popped into my head and I just confirmed it. Who knows how such things happen?

It's okay if you have the right answer. And if you have the right answer, I'm really impressed.

Nudge Saturday!

Only the five theme entries matter.

In the four-word phrase that you are looking for, the first two words correspond to the first word of the themers, while the last two words of the phrase correspond to the second word of the themers.

If you're still stuck, watch:

Also if you're not stuck, you should watch this anyway.
