MEOW #8: Snake In The Grass

A weekly meta crossword on the forum started by member Josh (aka madhatter5). These puzzles are often very creative with solving mechanisms out of the norm and skewing towards the more challenging. Puzzles are posted every Wednesday, and the solution appears the following Tuesday.

MEOW #8: Snake In The Grass

#1

Post by madhatter5 »

Hi all and welcome to the eighth installment of the MEOW!

The answer to this meta is what someone might feel upon finding a snake in the grass. Be sure to change the batteries in your smoke detectors because this one is a puma in the savannah.

Note that colors here are only for aesthetics and not at all relevant to the meta. (Black squares are now brown and green. The brown is the snake and the green is the grass, okay? Work with me here, I know I'm not exactly Picasso).

Good luck!

Iโ€™m trying to remember what I said to Madhatter5 about my collection of highlighters. I have like 4, which occasionally is not enough. As Amy Farrah Fowler would say, "This meta is harshing my buzz!"

Thanks to KayW for alerting me to a typo in 19-Down. The clue should be "Big safari man" in the singular. Nothing to do with the meta.

Hmmm - every time I try to act my age I just want to sit in front of the TV set and bitch about the state of the world - so no thanks! Granted I cannot act Josh's age or I'd end up in the ER (or jail!).

NB: That does not mean Josh does illegal things but rather that what is acceptable in your 20's is not really tolerated in your 70's
NUDGES!I am always willing to give nudges where needed; metas should be about fun, not frustration. Send me what you have done so far because often you are closer than you think!

A few years ago, I was chatting with someone I met through work, he, at the time, in his early 70s, and me, at the time, 60 or 61 or so. Somehow we got to talking about Superman comic books from our childhoods. He said, "Oh, I'm still 11 years old." Of me, my wife says, "Yep, you too, you're about 11." She's 14. I guess she likes 'em young. Ooh, that's weird. But you know what I mean.

Now back to "Snake in the Grass". Grid done. Nothing on the meta yet.

Iโ€™ve submitted after a pretty zany solving experience. Awaiting confirmation.

Ah yes, right, I was planning to introduce "nudge Sundays" in any case and then of course I completely forgot about it :) So thanks for the reminder.

Pay special attention to 29-Across, the title, and also the difficulty level of the puzzle.

You are looking for four types of grassy ecosystems, and the answer is a four-letter word.

If you're still stuck, always feel free to send me a PM and I can try to help you along (this is true for any puzzle).

Got it.

But only after spoilers, and PMs with multiple Muggles, flying all around.
