MEOT #37.5: Hanging Out with Isaac

#1

Post by madhatter5 »

Hi all and welcome to the thirty-seven-and-a-halfth installment of the MEOW! (Or MEOT, I suppose, being Thursday and all).

This is a bonus extra puzzle for the week to go with the extremely difficult one. Note that while this one is easier I do not necessarily say it is easy.

The answer to this meta is a brand name.

Good luck!

An answer submitted - awaiting commentary.
Postscript - nope, not the desired answer.

(As I can freely edit while the last post in the thread) - working on an alternate path and have something, but nothing I recognize.

Solved and submitted (and confirmed).

Hmm... At least I could see part of a mechanism in #37. I hope the answer doesn't require recognizing the Rorschach blot.

You probably got it....I didn't realize what I had, but it came to me later.
Was awaiting confirmation before posting again - have that now.

You can see the color version on the PDF file or web application :) Then you should recognize the blot. Really annoying that puz files do not support color.

I just saw the puzzle and have a quick answer. I’m pretty certain that I am right. Confirmed. I really enjoyed this one. LOL, once Josh dropped the dead weight things went swimmingly.

Well that makes a helluva lot more sense. Thanks for the tip!

Submitted, not yet confirmed. I don't know why I decided to do this one on the crossword.info link rather than downloading the .puz as I usually do. But in this puzzle, everything, as Paul Simon said, looks worse in black and white.

I submitted an answer. Not confident. Waiting confirmation, but satisfied in finding the mechanism. Clever idea!
EDIT: A couple of further steps needed to get there, including staring at list of entries, scratching head in the right spot, breathing...
New answer submitted, but yeah, #37 was MUCH easier than this one (imho).

Nudge Sunday!

Consider 1A

Once you've found the mechanism suggested by 1A you should have a list of four entries. Try putting them in ENTRY order from the grid.

Remember, equivalence is commutative!

None of the spoilers have helped me. I think this is another one for which I will wait for the solution and see if I can learn something.

OMG, this is the most amazing meta ever. Well, the most amazing meta since (checks profile) March, anyway.

Solution (in a spoiler since I know some of you are still working on it):

The key was the long across entry at 1A. Newton's Second Law says that F=MA assuming constant mass of an object or system. Taking this literally we can substitute MA for each of four occurrences of the letter F in the grid. We end up with the words

SELMA
MAINE
MAE WEST
MAUI

These happen to be the first words of four clues to other entries. In entry order, these are:

MILLS
AMERICA
ITEMONE
GOIN

The first letters here spell MAIG. Doing one last substitution we can spell FIG, leading to our answer:

FIG NEWTONS
