Cool puzzle! My spider-sense was on the right wavelength (or something) and I found the mechanism pretty quickly.
Don't apologize for 24D; certain online math homework platforms will accept the word "undefined" but others will accept your three-letter abbreviation. Easy as pi for Zoom math teachers.
