My first (wrong) answer brought me down some interesting rabbit holes as I researched for the extra credit.
With my next (right) answer, it was considerably easier to make a connection.
Think I'll go relax in my easy chair!

LAS, finished the grid, some ideas for the meta, but nothing very solid.

Have an idea of what the connection should be, but not able to connect the dots, dashes or grid.

Off the couch and confirmed. I had one small part wrong but it still fit so I came up with the answer. I had the extra credit part as soon as i read the title due to a personal interest. I have basically been trying to find the answer that worked. It was tough to word this last comment for reasons I will not expound upon for now.

The asterisk for the central clue has an additional symbolic meaning. The rock band answer at 60-A is a hidden nudge of where to start your journey.

Look at the long entries starting in the east and move towards a focal point. The carol’s lyrics tell you which way to go.

Submitted an answer consistent with what I saw.
Not 100% certain though.

I got the answers quickly but to my embarrassment, couldn't see the mechanism. I should have opened an albacore tuna can and seen what was inside.

Aha moment. Got the extra credit first but submitted the wrong meta answer. Have now gotten it. Not resubmitting. One shot a puzzle. Elegant!
