I finally got this.

Something I found kept me going in the right general direction but slightly off the proper compass point. I finally saw the proper path.

ONCE AGAIN as I was, regrettably, typing up a request for guidance inspiration hit.

Solution:

The clue for WILLIAM ARCHIBALD SPOONER is itself a spoonerism:

WORD BOTCHER -> BIRD WATCHER

The only bird watcher in the grid is AUDUBON
